More about us

Introduction

Primrose Earth Awareness Trust was set up in January 2000 on land that was previously part of Primrose Farm at the village of Felindre in Powys, Wales.

Much of our work involves young people, with school groups visiting Felindre and trust staff going out into schools. We also run in-depth courses on sustainable gardening and food production for enthusiastic gardeners and smallholders.

We are grateful for support from Environment Wales, The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Stanley Bligh Memorial Fund, SPIRIT YSBRYD, The Ernest Cook Charity, Adfywio, The Brecon Beacons National Park, The Community Tourism Fund, and PAVO as well as many generous individuals.

Our work and our philosophy

Our activities for families and schools are engaging and entertaining for all involved. But they also deliver important messages. All our work shows you…

  • how we could look after the earth
  • how people, plants and environments affect one another
  • how nature can make us feel better when we look after nature
  • how the way we live can make a difference - especially the way we grow our food

We are working with the hope of making a change in our society. We would like to live in a world where…

  • more people understand how the way they live affects the world, and choose to do things in a way that does not damage the earth over a long time
  • more people understand how their food is grown and choose food that is grown in a way that is healthy for them and for the earth
  • people know more about how nature works and how they are a part of it
  • people feel the benefit of working with nature
  • people understand how they can look after our natural habitat and take care of the earth

We think that encouraging our visitors to make a direct connection with the natural world through their senses maximises the impact of our message. However, we believe that individuals have the right to make their own choices about how to live - our education strategies inform, facilitate and empower, but don't try to instruct and dominate. Our venue and programmes are accessible to people of all abilities.

The outdoor tour and the teaching space at Primrose Earth Awareness Trust provide an unusual and inspiring environment with many natural features. Our buildings are constructed sustainably and harmoniously with natural materials that encourage creativity. Visitors to the Trust often have access to Primrose Farm - our neighbour - which is a nationally recognised exemplar of the application of permaculture principles to fruit and vegetable production and earth care.

We are acting locally (although thinking globally) by…

  • providing education programmes for our local community
  • emphasising our local cultural history and using the lifestyle and practices of early settlers in the area as an example of sustainable living
  • exploring how people of different cultures and traditions influenced each other in the past and comparing that with what is happening in the world now
  • forming links with sustainable projects in developing countries and sharing information with sustainably living indigenous people
  • applying a holistic approach to all our work - ensuring that our activities are financially and environmentally sustainable, sensitive and sustainable in their use of human resources
  • raising funding for our work from individuals, organisations and companies who share elements of our vision and support our mission
